Early Dutch Anabaptist leader Menno Simons wrote more than 1000 pages of theological writing. As Mennonites, we take our name from Menno Simons, but how many of us have actually read his writings? Perhaps some of us are more studied in heavy metal music. In order to test this theory, The Daily Bonnet has compiled a list of quotes from Menno Simons mixed in with metal lyrics. Apparently, the Calvinists had some difficulty telling John Calvin quotes from metal lyrics, but I’m sure Mennonites will do much better, right? Well, let’s see how you do!
"Haughty and proud flesh dislikes to be reproved, but ever uses its evil nature."
"Is God just a thought within your head or is He a part of you? "
"Satan is Christ with this miserable, erring world! Antichrist is seated in the temple of God."
"The healing hand held back by the deepened nail."
"Holy man, open up your eyes to the ways of the world."
"Mankind in his insatiable search for divine knowledge has discarded all Biblical teachings."
"How much longer must this terrible great blindness, blasphemy, error, and abomination last, this willfully reckless life?"
"I am heartily ashamed to touch upon such accursed charges of harlotry and wicked abandon before the ears of blushing pious persons."
"A long time ago I never knew myself. Then the memory of shame birthed its gift."
"There's no rest for consequences of guilt; facing my own doubts about what is actually real I told myself that I would live again."
"No matter how we sing to the wicked, it is never done correctly."
"They better run their course until they are met by the angel of the Lord, and rebuked by the ass."
"God was never on your side. See the ten thousand ministries, see the holy righteous dogs."
"Plain words...plastered over with the vile dung of satanic glosses, merely to suit the rulers who are but dust."
"The innocents died for the Pope on his throne; Catholic greed and its paranoid zeal."
